The Bus

So that was...interesting?

So that was...interesting?

You know those days where it feels like the universe is rooting for you to fail?  Yep, this was one of those days. Silver lining? Oh yea...in the form of a starry sky, s'mores and a crackling campfire.  Penny's engine was doing decently over the last few test runs, so it seemed like a good time to give real, sleep-in-the-bus, camping a go.  We are planning a week-long Wyo roadtrip in July, so really want to make sure Penny and our kiddos are up for the challenge.  She was blowing a bit more smoke than ideal when we ventured out, but...

The lady wants some sunshine.

The lady wants some sunshine.

Thoughts of putting on come uncomfy shoes and standing in an overpriced line for overpriced prime rib sounded just like what Mother's Day shouldn't be...so we did our own thing.   Our own sunshiney thing.  Our big yellow gal, Penny, hasn't been registered for any sort of recreational anything since 1999 {according to her Salt Lake City permit I so lovingly scraped off her windshield}. Not anymore, folks!  She is officially branded as a Wyo State Parks kind of bus and we couldn't be more stoked.     We packed a super-gourmet picnic lunch of sandwiches + chips; in addition...

Crap...We made it.

Crap...We made it.

Alright, guys.  It was time. Time to call the father-in-law to be on break-down stand by. Time to check to make sure the AAA card was safe in my wallet.  Time to take Penny out beyond Cheyenne city limits.   We had been puttering around town incident-free for about a week to stretch her little engine legs.  Incident-free, save for a few unexpected billowing clouds of smoke.  (A big sorry to the Cheyenne folks in our wake).  She was needing to burn off some old oily junk, so what seemed like a big spectacle was really...not so much.  Easter Sunday seemed...

Mom, can we draw on the bus?

Mom, can we draw on the bus?

Yes, the enthusiastic answer is yes. Our temporary solution to not beautifully restoring Penny's cabinets for the sake of small kid messes...is chalk.  Over the last few weekends I diligently attacked each cabinet with many, many coats of chalkboard paint.  Today was the maiden voyage.  I took care to *condition* the surface as all the blogs yell adamantly that you must, before any bit of chalk touches the paint.  This has hints of complication and maybe shampoo{?}... but really only entails rubbing chalk all over the surface and then wiping it off with a damp cloth.  Something about allowing better...

That rug really tied the room together.

That rug really tied the room together.

No, that rug really didn't.  Nor did the fitted sheet that had been Penny's rear seat cover for the better part of the past four years.  Gone — both are gone and it feels amazing.  We visited the floor store {hey there, poet} a few evenings ago and picked a grey wood grain vinyl {read: we have messy kiddos} with big aspirations for a real hard wood floor for Penny resto 2.0 a handful of years down the road. Today was a rip out the gross, moist {yes, damp}, dirty brown carpet kind of day.  Also on the docket was...
